Here we are six years after the horse flu and the Barraba Show was once again horseless. Due to the excess of water on the rings it was decided that the entire horse program would be cancelled for safety reasons. The gates were thrown open and the show went on as usual with the cattle, wool, poultry, dog and the junior Barraba Showgirl being judged. The pavilion sections were judged on Friday with excellent entries, especially from the juniors. Thank you to all the busy crafts people, vegetable growers and artists in the community. The lack of pumpkins and fruit noticeable but we will put that down to the seasons as a lot of trees didn’t fruit at all this year. The most successful junior exhibitor went to Ethan Smith with Ron Sadler taking out the most successful senior exhibitor. Once again there was a very high standard of entries. The patchwork quilt section was particularly outstanding; thank you to everyone who brought their work. It was very pleasing to see two entries in the children’s section. The champion needlework went to Jenny Copelin; champion crochet was also won by Jenny Copelin. Valerie McCusker won the champion piece of patchwork with the most successful exhibitor going to Jenny Copelin. Although there were not as many entries as the previous years the standard of work was quite high. The younger and junior knitters were well represented with school age entries up on last year. Champion crochet article was won by Norma Wallace with the champion knitted article being won by June Allan. Jenny Farrar was the most successful exhibitor in the knitting and crochet section this year. With only four classes with no entries in them, the cooking was well patronised; well done Barraba cooks! The champion exhibit in the cooking went to Lyn Forbes with Tara Watkins getting the junior champion ribbon. The most successful exhibitor was Marina Eckert and the most successful child exhibit going to Ethan Smith. There were some lovely artworks with the open section champion being awarded to Annie Clough and the junior champion was Rachel Koopman. Paddy Bourke won first in the infants section and Xanthe Hart won first in the primary section. Rachel Koopman won first place in the secondary school section. There were only 12 entries in the pottery with no junior entrants at all but there was a good showing of well made pottery and ceramics. Overall the collectables were of a high standard with many and varied items, highlighting the people of Barraba’s interest in collecting. The exhibits included items from across the equator to USA film stars and those from the Barraba area. The stylish cricket trophy for competition between Barraba and Woodsreef prior to the 1st world war was an interesting part of Barraba’s history. The judge was overwhelmed by the creativity of the Richardson House display which was judged champion collection. A very warm thank you to the donors of the glass display cabinets in the collectors corner. They made a great difference to the array in the pavilion. There were not enough photos to cover our new display boards which was a shame but modern technology means most photos remain in phones or computers. Mounting is also a problem – please use black paper and extra blue tack especially in wet weather. The champion black and white print was won by Amanda Scott and Viv Lloyd won champion creative. The champion colour print was won by Guy Derrick with Graeme Whan winning most successful exhibitor overall and Georgia King winning the champion school photographic entry. The judge in the jams and preserves would like to congratulate all winners and make mention of the lovely entries this year. She encourages all to keep on with their jam making & preserves and looks forward to the continuation of increased entries in 2014. Veronica Taylor won champion exhibit sweet and also champion exhibit sour as well as most successful exhibitor. Congratulations Veronica Taylor!!
