FROM THE BARRABA SHOW ARCHIVE: Presidents Report for 2014
This year the weather was in our favour with 3 beautiful days & just a little shower on Friday night to help settle the dust. The show was again a great success, with all sections having a high standard of entries & many positive comments from those attending over the weekend.
The draft section proving very popular with a total of 1200 runs over 3 days. Many other campdrafts previously being cancelled due to the dry weather and a lack of suitable stock. A special thank you to the donors of the cattle for the campdraft, in these trying weather conditions, it is very much appreciated..
Cattle numbers were down, but the standard was very good with Cascade Harley H178 being declared the Champion Hereford Bull & Supreme Beast of the show. This year saw the introduction of a new section: A Commercial Man's Choice to be judged by 3 local cattle breeders with the winner being the Supreme Beast of the Show, confirming the judges earlier decision.
The yard dog trials saw over 60 competitors in the new arena.Thank you to all those people who loaned sheep for the running of this event.
The wood chop saw the tree lop back on the program with 21 competitors entering in the overall chopping program. We also saw international competitors from Canada & America joy the line up as they tour around Australia.
The animal farm & Rodney the Clown were very popular with the children once again & we thank the Gill family & Georgie Patton who brought in their pets to the animal farm for children to handle, ride & love.
A BIG thank you to everyone who volunteered their time & effort before, during & after the show to make it a successful event. To the showground caretakers, bar staff, gate keepers, caterers, judges of all sections, chief stewards & stewards of the show committee. A SPECIAL thank you to Dave Penna & his crew for keeping the showground litter free & clean for everyone to enjoy. A mammoth task & one well done!!
Our guessing competition proved popular within the community with many people having a go at guessing who the buck jump rider was? The winner being Tim Bucknell who correctly named Viv McIlrick riding Flying Mailman in the buck jumping competition to first place at the 1949 Barraba show. Thank you to the McIlrick family for exhibiting the original photo & ribbon (see photo below right) in the collectors corner section in the pavilion.
To Jo Lord I think that the secretary position has been an eye opener for you & we welcome your enthusiasm to the position. The schedule was a big job and something that we need to think seriously about prior to next year. Jo also started a show Facebook page prior to the show, which proved very popular with the community and kept everyone, informed of what was happening in a much up to date time frame. Thank you to Patti for keeping the webpage up to date, if you have photos or information for the show site please send it to her so that it can be posted.
Val what would have we done without you in the show office prior to the show! Thank you for stepping in & helping out while Jo was unwell. Kylie Stanger took on the Assistant Secretary position and we thank her for all of her work in this role. To our treasurer Jenny Simpson & her assistants, we very much appreciate all that you do towards the smooth running of the financial side of our show & other events held throughout the year.
The Zone 4 Showgirl committee staged a wonderful event on the 22nd February with nearly 200 guests present to see 17 showgirls form the Zone judged, with the eventual winners being announced: Sally Newton from Walgett & Sarah Clift from Gunnedah. Thank you to the core committee (Val McCusker, Lib Croll, Kylie Stanger, Mandy Cabot, Jenny Simpson, Julia, Patti & Tim Crowley), all helpers & donors for all of your support in preparation and cleaning up after this event. We congratulate Abbey Ferris our 2013 Showgirl on her wonderful achievements in representing our show society & the community of Barraba. Thank you also to our runner up showgirl Yvette Miller for entering the competition and we hope that you & Abbey have both benefited from this experience. We wish you both well in your future endeavors.
One again we held the Peel Cutting weekend in May 2014 which again proved to be a very successful financially. Patti & I were away for this event, so thank you to Bill Croll & Campbell Tonkin for organizing the weekend in our absence.
To our retiring chief stewards, thank you for your years of dedication to our show society. They are Leon Cummins - Rodeo, Peter Geary - Show jumping,Tania Alderton - Dressage, Sara Bowman - Needlework, Pat Penna - Knitting, Christine Ibbotson - Cooking & Bill Simmons in the wood chop.
Thank you to everyone who competed & exhibited in our show, it’s great to see what Barraba has on offer. To our many sponsors, a big thank you, the show would struggle without you.
Finally, many thanks to everyone involved in the organizing & running of the 2014 show. To Patti, thank you for your support throughout the year.
