Wood chop
The first wood chop to be held at the Barraba show was in 1992. The wood chop is organized by the Axe Man’s Association with Jim Watts the handicapper, knowing how to keep the events close.
Many noted axe men have taken part in chops at Barraba, with up to 26 choppers at this popular event, for competitors and spectators alike. Sunday sees many people come to the show just to watch the wood chop. The Gordon Spencer Memorial is the prized perpetual trophy, which has been going for 14 years. This trophy was kindly made by the Chief Steward of the wood chop, Mr. William (Bill) Simmons, an axe in a padded wooden box.
Noted axe men to chop at Barraba have been Justin Beckett who was ranked 8th in the world, our own Jim Barker, who was an Australian Champion, and also represented Australia in the over 60s last year in New Zealand. Greg Baxter represented Australia & NSW for many years and comes to Barraba to chop each year.
