Showground caretakers
Joe Faulkner was the eyes and ears of the showground from September 1984, along with his wife Maree. Maree passed away in 2010 and Joe in 2012. Joe and Maree were enthusiastic in the preparation and maintenance of the grounds before, during and after the show. There was nothing that happened at the showground that Joe didn't know about. Joe, Maree and son Joe Junior lived in a caravan on the grounds.
Joe and Maree took over from Bert Robinson, who lived under the grandstand in the Jockey Club rooms. He would go home to his home in Alice Street while the show ground was in use.
Harry Hiscock was the care taker, in the early 1950s for a period of 8-10 years. He planted the avenue of palm trees still growing at the showground today. Harry also had many garden beds, mainly in front of the grandstand and around the luncheon pavilion. He was very proud of his gardens and would be upset if people walked on them. He also took pride in maintaining the race track and in wet weather would drain it with the help of Ernie Smith, Jack Barnes and Scottie White. When Harry retired Andrew Smith was appointed as Caretaker.
Harry Faddy was the caretaker prior to Harry Hiscock.
Minutes from the 4th September 1930 documented that T Upton had tendered his resignation as the caretaker of the showground. There were two applicants for the position of caretaker, and R Rowland was appointed to take T Upton’s place at this meeting.
